Creating Change

The question I have been asked most lately is, Kat, how do I make a habit stick?

My response: Well, what does the habit mean to you? I mean, really mean to you

Exercise, nutrition, mindset, appearance, career, family, spirituality, friendships...We are told to do and be a lot, especially from the external world.

Creating Change

In my last letter I mentioned that after 20 years of trying (oh-so desperately trying), I was finally able to make true, real, lasting change on how I related to my body, exercise, food and ultimately myself. Change that actually stuck. I'm talking cellular change kind-of-stuck.

Much of that was related to me finally seeing my enoughness and realizing that I was looking externally for something that actually grows internally, in the heart. The other part of making true lifelong habit changes – the part I'm sharing with you today – was figuring out what really mattered to me and then eventually, why.

Now, I'm not talking about something that I liked. I'm talking non-negotiables, things that mattered to me on the deepest level of my soul. Not to sound too morose, but I'm talking about things I want on my tombstone or said at my eulogy.

Peeling back the layers and figuring this out wasn't always easy and it definitely didn't happen overnight. Sometimes, the hardest part was simply coming to terms with the fact that I didn't ACTUALLY care about something that I THOUGHT I should (according to the outside world).

Did I really care about having visible abs or did I care about finding true freedom with my nutrition and lifestyle? Did I want to be on a cardio machine inside a gym for 2 hours a day or did I really want make room for spontaneity with my fitness and move my body however felt good that day?

There is no real right or wrong answer here, only the answer that speaks to your heart, that comes from a place of love and that deeply honors YOU.

Where to Start

This may feel really big and it can be. But if things just don’t seem to fall in to place – they just won't stick – no matter how hard you are trying, it might be worth asking:

Is this habit or goal something that is truly and deeply meaningful to me, my well-being and the life I dream to live?

Motivation to do and be has to start within, from the heart and from a place of love. The love will keep you going when every other thing runs out.

And that's when the habits will stick
